Phone Seller Arrested With N27m Hard Drug

Officers of Nigeria’s National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, have apprehended a 26-year old man in connection with 8.5kg of methamphetamine concealed inside metal pipes, the agency said on Tuesday.

The suspect, Afunaya Thaddeus Izunna, who sells phone accessories at Ikeja, Lagos, southwest Nigeria, was found at the weekend to be in possession of the drug during the screening of passengers on Ethiopian airline flight to New Delhi, India. Click to continue reading…

The drug, NDLEA claimed, is worth N27 million and was discovered when anti-narcotic officers insisted in searching the metal pipes inside his luggage.

The NDLEA Airport Commander, Mr. Hamza Umar said that the drug with a total weight of 8.5kg is one of the highest seizures recently recorded at the Lagos airport.

“This is one of the largest seizures recorded at the Lagos airport in recent time. It was a clever mode of concealment but I am glad we were able to detect it and the suspect apprehended. The case is under investigation” Hamza stated.

NDLEA quoted the suspect to have disclosed that he is married with 2 children.

“I am a trader. I sell phone accessories at Ikeja to take care of my wife and two children. It was a friend that gave me the metal pipes that I should take them to India for a fee. I did not know when, how and where it was packed. I was only given the bag containing the pipes. Unfortunately, when I got to the airport during screening, NDLEA officers discovered the drug and I was arrested. This is my first time of smuggling drugs. I hope my wife will understand and forgive men,” NDLEA quoted the suspect as saying.

NDLEA Head of Public Affairs, Mr. Mitchell Ofoyeju, said the suspect will soon be charged to court.

Baba Suwe to be freed on Friday

Justice Yetunde Idowu of an Ikeja High court, this morning, ordered the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, to release Babatunde Omidina, popularly known as Baba Suwe, on bail by Friday 4 November, 2011, if he fails to excrete the suspected narcotic substance he allegedly concealed in his stomach. The judge made the order while ruling on the application filed by Omidina’s lawyer, Bamidele Aturu, for the enforcement of his fundamental human rights.
After listening to the arguments of counsel from both sides, Justice Idowu noted that the NDLEA should have released Omidina immediately but for a Federal High Court order which empowered the agency to hold him till Friday.
“The only thing hindering me from releasing the applicant today is because of the Federal High Court order of 20 October. I don’t want to meddle with that order. But if he (applicant) does not excrete the suspected substance he is accused of harbouring in his stomach by Friday, NDLEA should release him on bail,” she said.
She set the bail on Baba Suwe for N500,000 with two sureties in like sum, and further ordered that his international passport be deposited with the High Court Chief Registrar.
Before she pronounced the order, Baba Suwe told the court that he was in good spirits.
“I’m in good spirits. I am not harrassed. I eat three times daily,” he said.
Amongst the artistes that arrived the court premises before the judgement was passed included Adewale Elesho, Kayode Olaseinde a.k.a. Ajirebi, Sokoti, Remmy Shitta-Bay, Alhaji Ade Ade, Opebe, Alhaji Abdullahi Abdul Rasak, Chairman, Corporate Pictures, Soji Taiwo, a.k.a. Omo Banke, Tajudeen Gbadamosi and Alade Adesina.

Update on Babasuwe’s Arrest by NDLEA

Seems nothing scary has been heard about Babasuwe’s drug issue with the NDLEA. The Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency has told the media that Babasuwe has only excreted twice since his arrest on Wednesday and will have to do this six times before he could be released, if eventually no drug trace is found in his excretions.
So that’s the latest, and the comic act will have to stay in their net till he comes out the sixth time. We think the comedian should just force himself to poo, so he could go home if he truly swallowed nothing. Abi why stay there unnecessarily.
