A 10-year-old pupil of All Saints Anglican Primary School, Oke -Ijebu in Akure, Ondo State, yesterday, shot dead his classmate with one of the two single barrel guns they found behind the toilet in their school.
A source said that the guns were found by two pupils who mistook them for toys.
The source said that another pupil took one of the guns from the two boys and started playing with it. He said the boy pulled the trigger by mistake and it released a bullet which hit his mate and killed him instantly.
The bullet was also said to have injured the other mate and the boy that fired the gun.
Parents and guardians of children in the school were said to have rushed to the place to catch a glimpse of the incident.
They expressed serious concern over the development.
Authorities of the school, it was learnt, closed down the school immediately to avoid protests from members of the public.
The remains of the dead pupil had been deposited at a mortuary while the injured one was receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital as at press time.
Efforts to identity the pupils involved in the incident were futile as the school was under lock and key when our correspondent got there on Wednesday afternoon.
The Public Relations Officer in charge of the state police command, Mr. Aremu Adeniran, who confirmed the incident, said the command suspected that the two guns were hidden there by armed robbers.
The PPRO said a sledge hammer, cutlass and other instrument were also recovered when his men searched the place.
He said policemen of the command had begun investigation into the incident.
